Re: [LCA2011-Chat] Some Anti-Harassment Policies considered harmful

Hi David,

Not being the confrontational type I would rather not make this
request at all but I care about LCA and want it to be a welcoming
community. And I believe this requires me to stand up on this occasion
and say "I don't think this behaviour is okay nor contributing to
making LCA a welcoming safe place".

David, are you aware that--at least to me--your current postings to
the mailing list are painting you as exactly this kind of
exclusionary, un-welcoming person and a "concern troll"

I find it difficult to believe that anyone reading this thread will be
unaware of your perspective and--in light of this--urge you to
consider taking a break from this topic for a couple of days.

This is not intended as a slight against you and I would rather have
made this request privately but given the topic of the conversation I
think it's important that I not be seen as a silent observer.

I recognise you are obviously free to continue to participate in your
current manner and pay my request no heed.

I wish you well and hope your time at LCA was technically enriching.

Thank you for reading.

I suppose this looks like a good place to can put my bit in.

It was me, at the registration desk that the initial complaint was made.
No hysteria; the point was simply put, name given, and the notification
that I put together to the Organisers on his behalf was agreed upon.

As a part-time volunteer Naval Rating (RNZNVR), harassment is something
that I am constantly aware of, as is the Navy as a whole. To this end,
they regularly train people to be Anti-Harassment Officers. I had
intended to take this course last year, feeling that it may be useful at
the conference (that in itself is a sad thing to have to say).
Unfortunately, timing meant that I couldn't, but I fully intend to
complete the course this year, and ensure that the conference knows of
this for next year - in the same way that I ensured that the Volunteers
organisers know that I'm a trained First-Aider.

Beyond that, all I will say is that I do agree that discussion is
important - far better than ignoring the subject.

Cherie Ellis
